Painting Fences and Interiors My New Place

Painting the fences is the last big project I have done, that was at and around Christmas 2015, the paint/stain was quite expensive, NZ$86/4litres, used 5 tins.  All through 2016 I have been plagued by strange illnesses and am wondering if this has anything to do with the T.U.R.P.S. operation (google it) I had at the end of 2014 after moving into the New Place.

I need to put a new base on the garden shed to re-align the floor and stop the shed leaning but simply have not found the energy or enthusiasm this past year.  It's important that I do it so that I can re-arrange all the stuff in the garage from the old place and be able to find things when I need them.

It's been years since I have posted and in that time I have moved out of the family home which was devastated by the multiple thousands of earthquakes and moved into a retirement village.

I am happier here than I thought I would be.

The extensive garden of the old place took up lots of my time since Dad died in 2002 and I took over his duties.  Mum became increasingly frail and could only assist in a limited way.  I can't believe I kept up that amount of effort for 12 years or so without realizing how much I was actually doing.  Here I only have a very small garden and can keep up relatively easily.  This means I have much more time to do the things I want to do.

Mum died in 2013 as a direct result of having to move into an old peoples home and out of the old house which she loved because of the damage caused by the earthquakes.  I told her she should stay on at the house despite the risks and difficulty with heating etc, but outside family voices persuaded her otherwise.

Here is a picture of my new best friend, Stella.

And because we felt Stella needed a companion, we got Sadie puppy.

Here is Stella and Verne, Xmas 2016

Here are two delightful pics of Stella and Sadie, now much bigger on Rose's bed.

Here's a possible solution to the Win8 Start Menu problem.

Add a Free Start Menu in Windows 8
Haven't posted for ages.  The earthquakes in Christchurch have affected and ruined many peoples' lives, ours included.  Our beautiful house is badly damaged and will have to be rebuild but the Insurance Companies are not living up to the agreements that they supposedly have with people according to their policies and it is very difficult to get any action.

They are stalling and playing for time; many older people have already died from the trauma of losing their houses and possessions and then having to fight with the Insurance Companies.

Here's an interesting site detailing what has been lost in the transition from XP through Vista to 7 and now 8.

Installing Ubuntu From A Windows System With Wubi

Wubi is an Ubuntu installer for Windows that lets you install and uninstall Ubuntu from a Windows desktop. Wubi adds an entry to the Windows boot menu which allows you to run Linux. Ubuntu is installed within a file in the Windows file system (a loopmounted partition), this file is seen by Ubuntu as a real hard disk. That way the hard drive does not have to be repartitioned before the Ubuntu installation. The resulting Ubuntu installation is a "real" Linux system, not just a virtual machine. Wubi makes it easy for Linux newbies to play around with Ubuntu.

Free Will

I love this:

'It is certainly not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable: it is with precisely this charm that it entices subtler minds. It seems that the hundreds of times refuted theory of "free will" owes its continued existence to this charm alone - : again and again there comes along someone who feels he is strong enough to refute it.'

This guide is based on the style book which is given to all journalists at The Economist

The Tao

When a superior man hears of the Tao, he immediately begins to embody it.

When an average man hears of the Tao, he half believes it, half doubts it.

When a foolish man hears of the Tao, he laughs out loud.

If he didn't laugh, it wouldn't be the Tao.

The Anonymous Liberal

"The essence of the Liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held,
but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they are
held tentatively, and with a consciousness that new evidence may at any
moment lead to their abandonment." -Bertrand Russell

Anonymous Liberal

"As an attorney who deals with subpoenas and requests for electronic
documents on a regular basis, I can tell you that if a private
entity--particularly one subject to legally mandated record keeping
requirements--were to inform government investigators seeking such
documents that they had been "mishandled" and were now "lost," that
entity would immediately find itself in a world of hurt and would be
lucky if it survived the aftermath. No amount of talking would be
enough to convince the authorities that there was an innocent
explanation for the missing documents. They would be absolutely
convinced that the "mishandled" documents were intentionally destroyed
in order to cover up wrongdoing."

Topic 296: Scott MacFarlane, "The Hippie Narrative"

Of all the topics I have read on The Well this is one of the best.

Example: "A great many people have talked about psychedelics opening themselves to believing in a higher presence."

Response:

"I can see why that kind of talk would be more compelling than talk about how a psychedelic experience brings the user an understanding of how there's no higher power, That It's All Up To Us." - Cynthia D-B permalink #230

Extraordinary, the whole topic is well-worth reading.

Bromley Contingent

While the music and image of punk was being formed by McLaren / the Sex Pistols and Vivien Westwood's clothes there were two other groups of people who would contribute to the scene. One was the loose pool of musicians like Mick Jones, Tony James and various members of the Damned and Clash etc who would be sparked into action by the Pistols and a group of fans who would come to be associated closely with the Sex Pistols many of whom would themselves form bands as the Pistols roller coaster trundled on.

This group of fans would come to be known as the Bromley Contingent and featured among others Siouxsie, Debbie, Soo Catwoman, Simon Barker, Sharon, Tracey, Billy Idol, Steve Severin to name a few and lovingly described in 'The Boy Looked At Johnny' by Burchill / Parsons as 'a posse of unrepentant poseurs, committed to attaining fame despite the paucity of talent other than being noticed; achieving their aim by displaying themselves in a manner meticulously calculated to kill.'

This is of special interest to me because I was born in Bromley and if we had not gone to Africa maybe I would have been able to be associated with these people and known them actually rather than just by reputation.
